Weather, weather forecast and when to go

Egypt lies in the subtropical zone. This country has dry weather with mild winters and hot summers. Between day and night are big differences.

You will mention only two seasons when visiting Egypt: a mild winter (November – April) and a hot summer (May – October). What makes them different are variations in daytime temperatures and prevailing winds.

When you travel from the Delta (North) to the Sudanese border (South) the average annual temperature will be higher. It can be compared to those of the open deserts. You may find Alexandria more suitable during the summer. Thanks to the cooler temperatures it has became a popular resort.

Note the hot spring wind Sirocco or Khamsin that blows across the country. It comes usually in April but can appear also in March or May. It starts in the Isthmus of Suez and continues through the northern coast of Africa. Be aware of the sandstorms. They can cause temperatures to rise as much as 20° C in two hours.

For tourists who are interested in sightseeing tours is the most appropriate period to visit Egypt during winter months - October to April. Although there are often rainy and cold days in this period the  water in the Red Sea is not falling below 21 degrees Celsius. Summer is suitable only for summer seaside holiday as the temperature often leaves up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Hieroglyphs

The Egyptian inventory of signs is divided into three major categories:
logograms
phonograms
determinatives

It was an old writing system used by ancient Egyptians.

Jean-François Champollion translated parts of the Rosetta Stone in 1822 and therefore is considered as a decipherer of the Egyptian hieroglyphs.
